About Dr. Terry Dawson
Dr. Terry Dawson is a M.D. and board certified ophthalmologist serving the residents of Cullman and surrounding counties for 30 years as the principal founder of EyeCare Cullman. He is now a member of Cullman Primary Care (CPC), a multispeciality group. Welcome to our office located at 1800 Alabama Hwy 157 across from Cullman Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Dawson is a native of North Alabama and a graduate of the University Of Alabama School Of Medicine with a B.S. degree in Chemistry. He served an internship at Carraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham, Al. and an ophthalmology externship at the Royal College of Surgeons and Moorfield Eye Hospital in London, England. Residency in Ophthalmology was completed at the Eye Foundation Hospital in Birmingham, Al. in 1979 and he obtained certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Dawson was the first ophthalmologist in this area in 1980 to perform intraocular lens surgery as an outpatient procedure. He was trained in phacoemulsification by its inventor at the Manhattan Eye and Ear Infirmary in the 1970’s. This is still the procedure of choice for cataract surgery, only now much refined and only a 15 minute procedure.
He has performed over 12 thousand such operations, with the current option, in qualifying candidates, of implanting premium technology intraocular lenses for the correction of astigmatism or to allow multifocality of vision for distance and near.
In the early 1990’s Dr. Dawson was one of the first ophthalmologists in north Alabama to perform radial keratotomy for the correction of nearsightedness. He developed the largest RK refractive surgery practice in north Alabama and southern Tennessee. This later evolved into laser PRK and LASIK surgery. He now refers out any patients interested in this procedure.
